Alison Sanders to serve as associate chancellor and chief of staff

Sanders has worked in higher education for more than 25 years and currently serves as assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs and chief of staff in the UC San Diego Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor.

Alison Sanders holds a doctorate in educational leadership from UC Davis in addition to a Master of Arts in marine biology and Bachelor of Science in biology from San Francisco State University.

Alison Sanders has been appointed associate chancellor and chief of staff, effective Aug. 17. 

Sanders has worked in higher education for more than 25 years and currently serves as assistant vice chancellor for academic affairs and chief of staff in the UC San Diego Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor. 

“I am excited to welcome Alison to UC Santa Cruz,” Chancellor Cynthia Larive said. “Her experience within UC and in public higher education provide a strong background for this position, and I look forward to her leadership and partnership in strengthening and advancing our impact as a university.”

Collaborating with leaders across campus, the associate chancellor is responsible for helping to support and implement the chancellor’s vision and goals for the campus. 

Since 2019, Sanders has served as a strategic adviser to UC San Diego’s executive vice chancellor, providing expertise and counsel. She has provided executive-level oversight and implementation of the EVC’s priorities, directives and initiatives and contributed to the advancement of campus-wide initiatives. 

Prior to joining UC San Diego, Sanders was chief of staff for the president of San Francisco State University. She began working at SFSU in 1999 before taking on a number of roles within the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, including as the director from 2009 to 2015. 

Sanders holds a doctorate in educational leadership from UC Davis in addition to a Master of Arts in marine biology and Bachelor of Science in biology from San Francisco State University.
