Celebrating and observing the Jewish High Holy Days
As the Jewish High Holy Days approach, learn about observance dates, accommodations, move-in flexibility, Slug Start and resources available on campus.
Dear Slugs,
As we prepare to welcome the new academic year, Jewish members of our community will be observing the High Holy Days over the coming weeks: Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This year, Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown on Friday, Sept. 11 and continues through sundown on Sunday, Sept. 13. Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Sunday, Sept. 20 and ends at sundown on Monday, Sept. 21.
We recognize that students observing these holidays may experience conflicts with move-in logistics or Slug Start programming during this time. If your holiday observance affects your ability to attend orientation, Slug Start activities, move-in appointments, or class preparation, please reach out directly to the appropriate campus office or your instructors as soon as possible. Instructors will also receive a message about High Holy Days flexibility to help support students who need accommodation during this transition period.
For students on campus during Rosh Hashanah, we invite you to visit the apples and honey station in the College Nine/John R. Lewis, Rachel Carson/Oakes, and Cowell/Stevenson dining halls, a Jewish tradition symbolizing wishes for a sweet new year. Look for signage in each dining hall to direct you to the apples and honey.
