Race the Flame brings wildfire evacuation run to campus Oct. 17
The 2.2-mile community run and walk starts at the East Field and ends with an emergency preparedness fair.
If a wildfire forced you to evacuate on foot, how long would it take you to reach safety, and would you know which way to go? Community members can find out on Saturday, Oct. 17, when the City of Santa Cruz’s Race the Flame comes to UC Santa Cruz.
The 2.2-mile run and walk begins at 8 a.m. at the East Field and follows Coolidge Drive downhill, ending at the Bay Tree Campus Bookstore and High Street. At the finish line, community organizations will host an emergency preparedness fair. The fair will focus on having the supplies and a plan to care for your household during the first 72 hours after a disaster.
Registration is $20 for adults and $15 for children 12 and under. UC Santa Cruz affiliates can save 50 percent on registration using the discount code UCSC2026. Participants receive safety materials, post-run refreshments, and a commemorative T-shirt while supplies last. The event runs until noon.
Net proceeds benefit Friends of Parks & Rec Santa Cruz, a nonprofit that supports Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation programs and facilities.
