Dear Campus Community,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Roze Hentschell as vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Education, effective July 1, 2027.

Hentschell currently serves as chief academic officer for the Colorado State University System and interim associate dean for faculty affairs in the College of Liberal Arts at Colorado State University, Fort Collins. She is a professor of English whose scholarship focuses on early modern literature and culture.

Since joining Colorado State University in 2002, Hentschell has held a range of roles focused on academic affairs, program development, advising, and student outcomes. As chief academic officer, she works with leaders across the Colorado State University System to advance academic and student priorities, support strategic initiatives, and strengthen partnerships with state and national organizations. Hentschell helped secure a U.S. Department of Education grant to expand data-informed advising and course-level interventions and established cross-campus communities of practice in admissions and enrollment, student affairs, and student success.

In the College of Liberal Arts, Hentschell has led initiatives in curriculum development, experiential learning, undergraduate research, and support for first-generation students, while helping improve enrollment and retention.

She also brings experience within the University of California system. As an American Council on Education Fellow, she worked in the Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor at the University of California, San Diego, where she focused on undergraduate education and student success at a research university.

Hentschell earned a Ph.D. and M.A. in English from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a B.A. in English from Vassar College.

I would like to thank the members of the search advisory committee, especially Chair Alex Wolf, for their thoughtful work throughout the search process. I also want to thank the many members of our campus community who participated and shared their perspectives. Your feedback played an important role in this search.

My sincere appreciation goes to Richard Hughey for his continued service as vice provost and dean of Undergraduate Education during the 2026–27 academic year and for his ongoing dedication to our students, faculty, and staff.

Please join me in welcoming Roze Hentschell to UC Santa Cruz.

Sincerely,
Paul
